The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center resides on one of the most comprehensive health sciences campuses in the country and is the only academic medical center in central Ohio. It is committed to improving people’s lives through personalized health care and P4 Health. Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center is committed to transforming medicine and accelerating the application of discovery to therapies that improve the lives of patients. This commitment is fueled by the sequencing of the human genome, interdisciplinary collaboration among researchers and clinicians and emerging fields such as biomedical informatics and systems biology in which Ohio State is a national leader.
The Ohio State University Center for Personalized Health Care is earning international distinction through its leadership in a novel approach to personalized healthcare known as P4 Health — medicine that is predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory. P4 Health focuses on delivering health care by bringing the right intervention or treatment to the right person at the right time to save money and improve outcomes. P4 Health will enable the delivery of key evidence-based practices to reduce healthcare costs and improve outcomes, and leverage the interface among an individual’s unique DNA, environment and behavior to promote health and wellness. P4 Health utilizes advances in genomics and molecular diagnostics to provide predictive information that is necessary to tailor, or personalize, disease-management approaches for each individual. Therapeutics and health management tools are being developed to help prevent disease instead of merely treating the symptoms. Medicine in the future will also be participatory. Patients will have access to a single portal that electronically stores their medical records and genetic profiles in addition to tools that analyze these data and provide precise strategies to promote wellness. In addition, social networking and the power of games are instrumental in engaging the consumer to taking ownership of their health care.
The Center for Personalized Health Care is leveraging the use of social media and has created an e-newsletter and a blog containing developments relevant to the advancement of P4 Health. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter, too.
Creating process-based care models is one way Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center is creating the future of medicine. This transformative type of medicine integrates advances through research in genomics, diagnostic imaging, bioinformatics and systems biology, providing a window into one’s health and pathways for fully individualized wellness and treatments. Additionally, the Center for Personalized Health Care is creating apps, games and virtual clinics to engage and empower consumers to take ownership of their health care.
